Is Earth’s core leaking? Volcanic rocks provide strongest evidence yet
Nature, Published online: 21 May 2025; doi:10.1038/d41586-025-01612-z
Samples from Hawaii seem to contain material that passed across the boundary between the planet’s core and its mantle, nearly 3,000 kilometres below the surface.

Antimalarial-treated bed nets could stop parasites developing in mosquitoes
Nature, Published online: 21 May 2025; doi:10.1038/d41586-025-01609-8
In a fresh approach to blocking transmission of the malaria parasite by mosquitoes, potent antimalarial compounds that kill parasites in mosquitoes are incorporated into bed-net prototypes. Exposure to the compounds through bed-net contact prevents parasite development, even when infection takes place four days later.

Unravelling cysteine-deficiency-associated rapid weight loss
Nature, Published online: 21 May 2025; doi:10.1038/s41586-025-08996-y
Conditional cysteine restriction in mice causes substantial weight loss, exceeding that seen with essential amino acid restriction, by activating the integrated stress and oxidative stress responses, and by unexpectedly depleting coenzyme A, leading to metabolic inefficiency.

Mice lacking this amino acid lost 30% of their body weight
Nature, Published online: 21 May 2025; doi:10.1038/d41586-025-01597-9
But eliminating cysteine, which is found in high-protein foods, from human diets would be challenging.

A retrograde planet in a tight binary star system with a white dwarf
Nature, Published online: 21 May 2025; doi:10.1038/s41586-025-09006-x
A planet in a retrograde orbit around a star with a close-in white dwarf companion reveals the role of binary stellar evolution in the formation and evolution of planets.
